Although Cosmetic Surgery cannot change your life per se, more self-esteem and a better feeling within yourself can encourage you to finally make long thought changes or to continue your daily life, but now with a content smile when looking into the mirror, buying a bra, a well-fitted dress, or a new pair of jeans.
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or eye-bag removal, involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelid aiming at achieving a more alert and youthful appearance.
After the age of 40 or in some cases earlier the skin loses some of its elasticity. This can cause the eyelids to develop redundant skin, which in the upper lid may fold over creating a hooded effect. In the lower lid the consequence can be deep furrows or creases.
Advancing age also results in weakening of our facial muscles. This can induce that fat, which naturally sits around/behind the eye and which protects it, protrudes through weak muscle gaps, producing so called eye-bags.
Before you see your surgeon, it is recommended that you consider what you want to achieve from the operation. In particular, please, understand that the surgery will only affect the eyelids. Blepharoplasty does not affect wrinkles, folds and creases that lie away from the area around the eye socket itself. Thus, it cannot improve crow’s feet and it cannot lift the cheeks neither the eye brows. Discolorations cannot be affected neither. During the consultation, I will advise upon the best option for you and explain “why and how”.
The operation takes about 45 minutes. It can be performed under local anaesthesia alone, local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia. Either the upper or lower eye lids or both can be operated in the same session.
Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and directly below the lashes in the lower eyelid. Usually patients go home the same day. If your work is not physical (no lifting or sports), expect to return to work after 7 to 10 days. Normal physical exercises can be started after 3 to 4 weeks.
After the operation you feel more or less bruised and sore. Your eyes are probable swollen and especially after a lower blepharoplasty expect some bruising (“panda-bear”-look), which can last up to 4 weeks in rare cases. Same due to the skin removal closing of the eyes might feel tight for a while. During the first week it is recommended to keep your head elevated to assist the swelling go down.
The sutures are removed after 6 days. In the beginning the scars will be slightly pink. Subsequently as all scars, they will fade over a period of time. In most patients, they are all but invisible. However, it is important to remember that no surgical scar ever totally disappears.
Regarding possible risks and complications cosmetic surgery is very safe. However, everybody has to accept that no surgical procedure is entirely free from risk. These possible, but rare risks will be explained to you during the consultation and I shall answer all your questions. In addition, you will receive a “Patient Guide” for Blepharoplasty.
